Future of TaylorCountyTalk

Hello everyone.  While visits to the site are still pretty strong, participation has slowed to a crawl, and many of my veterans no longer take part.  I am the first to admit that issues in Taylor County have subsided substantially and maybe that is why we don’t have much to talk about, I don’t know.  I created this site several years ago for the citizens of Taylor County to let their voices be heard in a public setting, and I feel that it made a difference here and that is what I wanted.

Florida GOP Primary

With no clear front-runner in the Republican party to take on Barack Obama, the January 31 GOP Primary may set the pace for who the candidate will be. Many voters in Taylor County are registered Democrat so there probably won’t be a huge turn-out, but I am curious to who we pick.  Personally, I don’t think it will matter who is President or who is in Congress, because until you take the money out of politics, we the people will continue to have no representation.  I also don’t see how anyone could support either party considering their track records, but that is my opinion.  All we have to do is look what we have elected in our own Governor’s office and State Legislature and what they are doing.

Citizen Unhappy With City Council Decisions

Well Commissioner Gunter is at it again. He doesn’t want the city to give you an extension on your utilities if you win at the Local Internet Cafe’s, he doesn’t seem to mind the business’s on 19 being required to maintain their buildings, but if you own a building downtown, or your related to him, or he knows you socially, then he doesn’t want the Government to meddle in your affairs.

How Counties Compare

Florida Tax Watch released its annual publication that compares the revenue and expenditure profiles of Florida’s 67 counties to give taxpayers an overview of how their local governments stack up with the rest of the State’s. The report has four main sections: I) Property Taxes; II) Other Taxes and Revenues; III) Per Capita Revenues and Expenditures; and IV) Basic Information.

Passing of Dr. J. Clayton Pruitt

I have been informed of the passing of Dr. Clayton Pruitt yesterday.  Dr. Pruitt has been working towards developing a large part of undeveloped Taylor County coastal land he had purchased several years ago into the Reserve at Sweetwater Estuary.  He had a grand vision of what he wanted it to become and I hope his heirs continue the project.  I would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends.

School Lunches

Before I start, if I have received false information, then I apologize.  Some information has come to my attention that disturbs me greatly.  Now, this may have been going on for just this year, several years or many years, so this may be old news to many, but it’s new to me.

*Updated* Should The School Dress Code Be For Everyone? (also included, School Football Issues)

As we all know, the State adopted a new dress code for Florida Schools, which Superintendent Dyal implemented.  My questions is, should everyone involved in the daily operations of the schools be required to adhere by the same dress code?  Since the start of the school year, I have heard of teachers wearing clothes that would be against the rules for the students, like mini-skirts for example.  I understand a fifth grade teacher wore a mini-skirt to her classroom.  I ask that question because many, many more times than not, the laws, policy changes or rules don’t apply to the lawmakers.  Don’t you think that if you are telling kids that dressing in certain clothes is inappropriate at school, then it should be inappropriate for everyone, including administration?  Personally, I think everyone working or going to the schools should have to adhere to the new dress code.

UPDATE: Re: Handicap Citizen Gets Cold Shoulder

I was sent an email today regarding an update to the situation mentioned in the prior topic.  Below is the email minus the name of the person involved:

Handicap Citizen Gets Cold Shoulder

I received an email today regarding an alleged issue with a handicap citizen and her son.  This woman is a severe diabetic and has recently had one leg amputated and a wound that won’t heal.  Her 12-year-old son signed up to play football.  The boy has a cousin that is playing also and she went to City Manager Bob Brown and explained her situation and only asked for his assistance to see if her son and the cousin could be on the same team due to transportation issues.  See, they live next door to each other and they could ride together because she can’t drive.  That is all she wanted.  She was not asking for money or for the city to provide transportation, nothing like that, she just asked if that could happen considering her severe health issues.

New School Dress Code

The State Legislature amended Florida Statute 1006.7 with Senate Bill 228 to include a Standard of Dress for K-12 Students or a Dress Code.  How do you feel about it?  Do you think it is a good thing or a bad thing and why?

Site Updates

Just wanted to let you know that I have made a few changes/additions to the site.  I have added a new login/register widget to the sidebar that will make it easier to login/register and keep you on the site instead of sending you to the Dashboard/Profile page.  I have also added a “Who’s Online” widget in the sidebar to tell you how many are online.  I have installed a like/dislike ability for comments.   There is also a contact form to make it easier for users to send me an email; it is located across the header.

TCHS Needs New Coach Already

Taking nothing away from Mr. Boggs, because I can’t blame him for taking the opportunity to go home, but when is this County going to stop spending the money they spend searching for people outside the community to fill positions.  They overlook local candidates and pay the people salaries for a year or two, only to have them leave for greener pastures.  You will find very few people who want to live here if they were not born here or nearby.  I read in the paper that Mr. Dyal was going to look local and that there are several good candidates.  I hope he lives up to that and hires someone who will have longevity, character, can get the job done and can be role model to these young kids.

County Employees Union Contract

This Tuesday after the regular commission meeting the commission will go into a non-public executive session to discuss the union contract for county employees.  As you well know throughout the entire country the taxpayers have been saddled with the long reaching effects of union contracts and this issue is in the news countrywide practically everyday.  The question is should these union agreements be subject to public scrutiny before local government agrees to contract terms or should agreements continue behind closed doors and the taxpayers are forever burdened with not only the costs but also benefits that the private sector never enjoys.  As we have no commissioners with true business experience in employee benefits are they qualified to make long reaching binding decisions.

New Section

I recently added a new section to TCT. It is a business review section for you to rate and post comments regarding likes and dislikes of local businesses. Check it out, use it and let others know about it. The link to it is above in the menu section labeled, ‘Local Business Reviews’.  Thanks.

Gov. Rick Scott’s First 100 Days

Political newcomer and tea-bagger Rick Scott has finished his first 100 days in office as governor of our great state of Florida.  Scott ran his campaign on job creation and smaller government, with the end philosophy of running government like a business.  Since day one, Scott has publicly praised State workers, but vilify them with his policies.  Among the many things he wants to change regarding employees is requiring all workers that are a part of the Florida Retirement System (FRS), which include teachers and many city and county employees statewide, to contribute a percentage of their salaries to the fund which is now 100% funded by the employer.  He wants 5% across the board, while the legislature is leaning towards a lowered amount.  He wants to raise the employee health insurance rates to an amount that will make it almost impossible for many of the workers to carry.  He also wants to privatize prisons, which will ultimately affect the employment of approximately 50% of the officers in those prisons.  He also wants to make drug testing mandatory of all State employees, except the elected State employees…imagine that.  Also, layoff about 2,000 employees.

County Stepping Up?

Well, after reading the paper the last few weeks, it seems like the County is beginning to listen to its citizens and step up some.  FINALLY, the TCDA/County is starting to take some actual steps to at least try and bring some jobs to the area.  Seems like the TCDA has swallowed some pride and joined in with some surrounding counties to do this.  There is nothing wrong with saying you can’t do it yourself and be a part of a collabarative effort to get a job done.  There are a few other things they seem to be trying to do and if you care to comment on them please do.  I will have to give the County a positive mark for a change.

How Is Your Commissioner Doing?

It has been long enough since the last election to review the jobs of our current commissioners. How do you think they are doing? You can comment on them as a whole or by District.
