I would like to open a discussion about Doctors Memorial Hospital. It has come to my attention that the CEO of the hospital has cut pay pretty much across the board. I understand that when times are tough in a company you must make changes and cuts to bring things back in line, but my question is has he cut his pay? Probably not. Has he cut the pay of all employees and Dr.'s that are getting paid over 150K a year? Probably not all, maybe some, but I am sure not all. Did you know that Dr. Khodr makes 300K+ a year whether he sees a patient or not? Did you know that he charges DMH over $4,000.00 a month for the building he is in? DMH is not charging him rent on the building that has their name on the sign, but he charges DMH. I now know why he was the first one up at the public hearing regarding the money DMH wanted from the tax payeers; asking that they give the money. Understand I am not taking anything away from Dr. Khodr. He is an excellent Dr. and a fine individual, but when it comes to reviewing and cutting salaries...well I see one place to start. Now, granted, I have no idea who, or if he pays any of his employees out of his salary, or if DMH pays all the salaries or if the office itself supports the employees' salaries, but if it is the latter two, it doesn't take an accounting degree to see the issue. If someone knows this information, please let me know so I can talk a little more. I have been in the business world for quite some time and if a company is getting complaints, and the company is suffering because of it, then you isolate the problem and make the changes there first. You punish, or fire those that are the problem, you don't go to the only department that gets zero complaints and cut salaries and positions from people that have been dedicated to the department. I am speaking of the EMS department. That seems completely ignorant to bust the moral and pride of the only department that you never hear anything negative about in the paper. I have more to say and will if this discussion is approved and posted.

I would like to know if any of the Sheriff candidates have a plan on cleaning up the Jail. It is in a mess physically and operationally. There appears to be no one in charge; nor does it appear anyone there has any idea about how it should be operated. I'm not sure anyone there has ever had an idea about anything. It is a real shame so much money was spent on that building 10-12 years ago. It looks like it is 35-40 years old inside. Just go out there for a visit sometime and talk for a few minutes with the "administration".....it reminded me of the guy who always gets interviewed after the tornado. At any rate, you would be surprised to see how poorly a county facility is managed and allowed to deteriorate.
That's just my opinion folks...go have a look and judge for yourself. Maybe I expect too much.

What is going on with the local school board finances? How does an organization who operates using public monies have a deficit of almost one million dollars? Who is responsible for financial oversight? If it is the five "elected" officials who sit on the school board or the superintendent of schools, then maybe we should be saying, "Lucy, you have some esplaining to do!" Explain to us how you managed to get so far in debt and why we should re-elect you if you can't handle public monies any better than this?

I would like to start the topic of \"Who is the blog moderator and what is his realtionship with Del Tucker\". Or \" Clay Crews is running for County Commissioner. You will hear from me soon!! I Like the biased moderation. ***NOT***

Who I am is irrelevant, and I have no relationship with Del Tucker. I know him, and he knows me, but doesn't know who I am as BlogModerator. We are acquiantances. We don't hang out, or go to each others houses, or anything like that. We speak when we pass. I don't think I have been biased towards anyone or anything. In fact, Mr. Tucker has taken pretty hard questions and very personal comments that have been posted and unedited. I have edited comments that were negative towards Dr. Khdor and Sheriff William so I don't see how you can say I am biased other than removing something that is just plain mean and spiteful. If you don't like it, don't come back.

Are we reading the same posts? How do you know the BM is a HE. I don't see any bias. The thing that I see is the BM attempts to monitor the cheap, hurtful, irrevelant and petty comments. He is trying to take the high road, here and with some people, it is pretty difficult for him/her to do.
If the BM had an agenda - he simply would not let your thoughts or comments be posted.
Besides... this is suppose to be a fun and informative place to come and hang out. You need to understand that some of the posts are meant for effect and may not represent the opinion of the writer.

Now that there are three who have qualified for District 3 County Commission:
Lonnie Houck, Jr. (D)
Stanley Ridgeway (R)
Frank Russell (NP)
how about a discussion of this race, and ask the three in the race for their comments on this website. I'm sure a lot of residents of district 3 have questions for each of these candidates.

Thanks, and yes I did see that. Since he is unopposed in the Primary, I thought I would wait until after then so we can have just one discussion about the three going to the General Election. But, if you all want to now, we can.

Topic Suggestion:
Perry's rising Crime Rate & the Mayor Ketring's call for a crime summit
My Ideas:
1. Midnight curfew for all minors not accompanied by a parent. My violations a misdemeanor and make fines payable by parents.
2. All business except hotels to close no later than midnight. Make violations a misdemeanor.
3. All city council members, county commissioners, sheriffs, police chiefs, school board members, and candidates for these offices take mandatory random drug testing (leading by example) and the results of all tests taken by elected officials and candidates to be published.
4. Make all law enforcement officers, principals and teachers submit to random drug tests.
5. Put more cameras and drug detection equipment in schools (business community will donate money - I pledge I will).
6. Raze house and burn lots where multiple drug sales have occurred.
7. County should offer $2500 cash award to tips leading to the conviction of drug sealers.
8. This blog should make people post their real names.

Regarding the county commissioners and the job they are currently doing - I have heard some negative comments about some of these commissioners from people that actually work for them. Does anyone know how well the current commissioners stand behind their employees and how well do you think that these new candidate are going to do if they take office?

HAVE YOU EVER CALLED 911 AND Received GOOD CARE?. WELL DON'T EXPECT IT IN THE FUTURE. THE GREAT CHARLES DARCY CEO OF DMH HAS RAN OFF TWO OF THE GREATEST PARAMEDICS FROM RESPONDING TO YOUR
EMERGENCY CARE. HE NOW HAS PLACED AN EMPLOYEE WITH NO EXPERIENCE TO SUPERVISE THIS VERY IMPORTANT DEPARTMENT. YOUR TAX DOLLARS SUPPORT THIS VERY NEEDED SERVICE. CALL YOUR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS YOUR NEIGHBOR AND TELL THEM THIS IS LUDICROUS!!! I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT 5 EMPLOYEE'S ARE GOING TO RESIGN IF THIS DECISION STANDS. I HOPE THAT THE HOSPITAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS WILL PREVENT US FROM LOOSING THESE DEDICATED PARAMEDICS. THE CEO IS ALREADY RESPONSIBLE FOR US LOSING SOME GREAT DOCTORS AND IF HE CONTINUES HIS LUDICROUS ACTIONS WE WILL BE IN A POSITION FOR A OUTSIDE TAKEOVER OF ANOTHER CORPORATION THAT WILL NOT CARE WHO OR WHAT YOU ARE.

The Old Captain Will Finally Sink the Titanic
Well as not too many people know, the old chairman of the board at DMH was just put back in his fat old comfy chair again. This is absolutely the most idiotic thing the board could have done. He "pulls" out as chairman of the board for a year and now he is back at it again!!How can we have a person elected to a 33,000,000 hospital that filed bankruptcy 2 times in his own business run our hospital? What is our board thinking?? We need business people on our board that will not be puppets. We need people that that know how to run a business. We need to abolish the board completely and start over with business "savvy" sense and a little common sense. Isn't is so sweet of Dr. Hamden to come to visit Perry just at the same time they voted the old chairman "his pal" back into the old position. So much for..."out with the old and in with the new". OH Yeah...The hospital is paying for the CAPTAIN'S HEALTH INSURANCE. NO OTHER BOARD MEMBER RECEIVES THIS PERK!!!!!

With the election season in full swing, why not a discussion topic about the issues with the local election office. Issues such as absentee voter irregularities, buying of votes in certain precincts, casting of votes by people who have moved many years ago, illiterate voters voting with an "X", developmentally disabled voters voting absentee and the need to update the voter data. Neither candidate for Supervisor of Elections is addressing these issues that everyone in the county knows occurs in each election.
Reply to this
I can be quite assured that there are no irregularities within the election office. One can not tell me how scrutinized the elections have been over the last 8 years and with both parties watching like hawks making sure all is fair. Everyone who paid any attention to the last 8 years knows that all the election process are scrutinized by many. It is my understanding that all machines were updated after the 2000 snafu. I have known the current Supervisor of Elections for many years and to say that there are any levels of misconduct within her office is uncalled for. Her honesty and integrity are above all within this county. Also, after doing some research looking up the up the election law "file maintenance" is done every odd year. The database is updated at that time.
Reply to this
I think perhaps "A voter" was thinking of the past, when there were indeed many stories of irregularities. I can recall one specific election some years back where a particular candidate won only after getting a disproportionate percentage of the absentee ballot votes. I also heard stories of this candidate rounding up voters, driving them to the polls, and giving them gifts.
But as T. Mac says, the days of rigging elections on a large scale--especially in Florida--are likely behind us. There's just too much oversight.

Mr. Moderator.......The "Sweetwater" blog is getting more talk on jobs in Taylor County than the issue of Sweetwater. How about a blog just to debate job growth. I would like to hear the communities examples of how they would like to make the county a better place to live. I saw alot of complaints about our local law enforcement but when i look at a police officer i see someone who is least attempting to make a difference. They choose to spend less time with thier families, get yelled at, and risk their lives to help people.I also hear people complaining about no where for their children to play and thats why all the children are getting in trouble. Is it really the tax payers and the goverments job to raise children, and teach them not to lie, Sell dope, steal, not to get pregnate at 12. Is a playground or new "Spash pad" going to do that. If only it were that easy.

I want to start a discussion after reading Friday's newspaper article about the challenge of the line fee charge from the City. I realize the City is trying to "fee" themselves out of a deficit, but that article made me question my mother's gas bill even harder. When she got her gas bill due 6/16/08, the charges had doubled from the prior month. I took it to the City to question the increase and the person told me that natural gas went up. Well, the next month, it was back down to what it was the month prior to the increase. Her brother's bill, who is also on fixed income, did not come back down and he did not question it. We asked a couple of others in the same situation and some stayed up, but some came down. I am wondering if others have had the same experience, or know of others who have. I am looking into if the City is raising rates on some that maybe can't or don't ask, to increase revenue. I find it odd that my mother's bill came down after I asked about it, and her brother's and a couple of others did not. If enough respond with the same issue, I will request an investigation by the State into the City's business practices. Hopefully this is just a coincidence. I did some checking on the internet and didn't find where rates doubled one month and then dropped by same amount the next. Also found where it took a course of three years for rates to double.

I have a suggestion on a subject about the Amendment that is causing most if not all of the new county and state money problems. Why cant we start our own drive for a new Amendment that would allow us to "Opt out" of the present amendment if we the local tax players decide that we don't want to be a part of the south Florida Amendment. This just does not fit in our area, and as I have read in other areas of Florida as well. We should be able to choose for our selves. Why can't this be a Local Decision? What would we have to do to make it "our choice"?

Please post the following discussion regarding the current state of politics in Taylor Co.
Good people of Taylor County WAKE UP!! Or more specifically, WAKE UP, STAND UP, and SPEAK UP!! Being that this is an election year I have been trying to watch, listen, and learn about each of the candidates. Recent local events have taught me even more but have also led to more questions that each one of us as Taylor County residents needs to find the answers to.
I read the Perry Paper today. On the front page was a story about a Taylor County Sheriff’s deputy being federally indicted on charges of selling illegal fish – to the tune of some $200,000.00. According to the article the indictment comes after a two year investigation. Here’s the question we need to ask: why was this deputy not relieved of duty or placed on administrative leave after sheriff Williams found out about the federal investigation? I asked around and got the same response from several people, “It’s typical Taylor County politics.” Then I was told that at least one other current deputy has a criminal record and that two of the candidates for sheriff (Tucker and Poppell) were both fired from the sheriff’s office. Do we really want people who were fired as deputies to hold the highest law enforcement position in the county!?! This led to a broader discussion about “typical Taylor County politics”. For example, a recent article in the Perry paper indicated that former county commission Edd Sadler, was recently arrested for introducing contraband into a correctional facility. The contraband was cocaine and marijuana. His running buddy, Frank Russell, who had been convicted of felony drug charges before being elected as a Taylor County commissioner is running for a commission seat again this year!
This information is both shocking and appalling. How can we as voting citizens of Taylor County stand here with our heads in the sand and let these atrocities continue? The best thing that I got out of the article in the paper was that there are still good, ethical law enforcement officers with enough moral fortitude to stand up to the “typical Taylor County politics” and the “good ol’ boy system” and do the right thing. They saw a fellow law enforcement officer breaking the law and handled the situation – which I would expect any law enforcement officer to do. We should applaud these officers.
Citizens of Taylor County, I urge you, get informed and be an educated voter. If we don’t, then we have no one but ourselves to blame for the continuation of the abomination that is “typical Taylor County politics”.

WHY IS GAS HIGHER IN Taylor COUNTY?
IT IS CHEAPER IN MAYO THAN Perry.
Reply to this
Because there is one company in town that either owns the stations or is supplying their gas, every one but Murphy, and they're right in line with them now. Gas was 3.88 at Murphy on the Parkway in Tally today. Have you noticed how Murphy here goes up during the day like 7 am to 6 pm or so, and then drops 3 cents in the evening, only to go up again the next morning?

I think that in each one of us lies a certain amount of problem solver, problem maker and problem finder. Fuel Prices.....
Has anyone ever noticed that the only competition the Everet monopoly has is Wal Mart? Fuel prices in Taylor county yesterday were in the $3.73 range. while in Tallahassee at Monroe and I-10 it was 3.55!! Now I can understand a 5 or 6 cent difference in price, but when Taylor County's prices are so much higher it really starts to look like we are overcharged. I drive to Tallahassee at least five times a week, so i see the differences in price all the time. I try not to buy fuel in Perry, but if I do then it's at Wal Mart so I don't contribute to the Everett Monopoly. I expect a higher price from a large company like Wal Mart, not a local person.

I live within a mile from Buckeye, and just a few minutes before 6:00 AM today I heard a sound that can only be described as INFERNAL coming from the plant. In two years of sitting on the porch and hearing the sirens, spoken blurbs over the megaphones, etc, I have NEVER heard such a sound. It was like screeching metal, in a repetitive/circular fashion, like tumblers or gears gone off balance. It lasted until 6:04. Does anyone have any idea what happened and why?

How about a topic on Bilal Khodr and his lawsuit against DMH and Dr. Emerick.
I remember a short time ago Khodr was on the news speaking for the hospital board, pledging that he would help the hospital and vowing to keep the hospital open, so the community could keep a hospital.
The question is how is suing the hospital an effective way in keeping the doors open? It sounds like he is motivated by GREED and not the welfare of the people and children in the community. He is also the Chief of Staff for the hospital? If he is still acting in this capacity, why in the world is he suing the hospital? GREED< GREED< GREED<
It is time to cut the cancer out of the hospital, I say start with Khodr.
Also there has been information in the papers stating that he resigned from the hospital board, I have also heard that the other board members removed him from the board. Which one is the truth?
I would love to hear what the rest of the community has to say about this situation!!

I would like to start a discussion on the dress code for Taylor County schools. As a parent of 3 teenagers , I have felt the sting from this.
I feel strongly that if they are going to enforce such a strict dress code , why not just make them wear uniforms?
My children have told me that if you do not wear certain name brand clothes at school , then you get treated differently. My kids have come home actually crying because of the way they have been treated.Thier grades have even dropped and I am having serious problems with depression and anxiety of not even wanting to go to school anymore because she feels like she just cannot fit in.
I would like to know what other parents think. I don't think I am the only one who is having problems like this.
I feel that putting them in uniforms would eliminate some of these problems.I sure bet that grades would come up and more of them would be passing the FCAT.
Kids can be very very cruel these days.i just feel that this would be a good way to fight back.
Anyone interested?

I would like to have a discussion/conversation with others about the census data for our county such as the 22.9% of families living at or below the poverty level in Taylor County. One fourth of the population is approximately 5,000 people living in abject poverty. Where is the prosperity repeatedly harked by county and state leadership that is to come from economic development? Why after repeated attempts to economically develop and multi-millions in tax dollars spent are we still under developed and failing to prosper? The county and state are obviously blowing smoke or else we would not be on the abyss of hopelessness again. How much more money for nothing can we afford to give to the same old ineffective programs and projects? Who is getting rich off these deals and who is getting poor seems to be the only question we have the answered.

How about a topic that discusses the practice at least two local businesses have started recently which involves boasting in the local paper about ethanol free gasoline? Raise some awareness throughout the community that ethanol can and is being produced from means other than food crops. One advertisement in the paper mentioned an improvement in gas mileage from fueling up with their ethanol free gasoline, but I wonder how many members of this community are willing to sacrifice 3% of their fuel efficiency if it means less money in the hands of OPEC and countries hostile to our interests by burning 10% ethanol fuel mixtures? Isn't it a well accepted fact that the money we pay for OPEC oil trickles down to various terrorist organizations? I’d personally rather keep 10% of the money I pay for E10 gas in the hands of American researchers than 100% in the hands of OPEC.

This November FL voters will have an opportunity to vote on two amendments to the FL Constitution designed to put an end to Gerrymandering. For those of you unfamiliar with Gerrymandering, it is the process by which congressional and legislative districts are drawn to favor one politician or another. Usually the result is a district that is ridiculously shaped such as in the photos here: http://www.facebook.com/FairDistrictsFL#!/album.php?aid=196362&id=313847464740 These amendments are designed to put a stop to politicians of both parties hand picking the voters in their districts, and hopefully restore some electoral competitiveness to congressional and legislative selection. How do the citizens of Taylor County feel about these Amendments? More info can be found here: http://www.fairdistrictsflorida.org/home.php

I think independent voters should form a workers party in Florida. It is unsettling to find all the growth and development issues being addressed in the capitol(s) session after session without a representative(s) of the working/middle class. The large sums of tax payer subsidy funneling into business through tax credits, incentives, government funding, loan guarantees, and exemptions per program (repeated multiple times/agencies)are burdening the workers to the breaking point. The tax-paying worker is having trouble paying for the upside down mortgages, children braces, milk, bread and gas.
Florida expanded government by mandating an energy agency/climate change group to assist in distribution of stimulus/recovery dollars, and the FDEP gave away big bonuses, the DCA was challenged/threatened to be dismantled by the legislature, that is now as we speak trying to take over the duties of PSC and found time to raise your taxes and fees to the tune of billions. What the hell is up with all that? This looks like the wall street/banking fiasco action plan. Some one should tell the millionaire politicians and their corporate sponsors that there are some packages that can not and should not be stimulated.
Florida’s republican controlled house and senate is touting the republican message of smaller government, less government involvement, and lower taxes on television news and Chamber of Commerce sponsored commercials. The attorney general wants to sue the feds to stop giving families healthcare security using the workers/tax payers dime. What a joke, it is as if the invisible man has shown up suddenly talking out of both sides of his mouth with the latest vote for me tele-a-marketing scheme. We are over worked and under paid but we are not stupid. If that’s the best our politicians can do, I say go home. You are fired.
The workers are subsidizing job development. It is paying to work. I think workers should have some say in what kind of jobs they are buying. A party to representative those doing the work. Let’s talk about job creation, end of recession, and the next round of tax payer funding.

Please let’s have a discussion about chubby kids with no place to play/swim the best exercise ever. No farm aid federal dollars for fresh farm foods. The lack of caring for Gods green earth and destruction to the environment hence the places we live.
The youtube video(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rXvoSl3oeA) reminded me of my youth in Taylor County. It would seem that there are those who think chasing hounds in a pick up truck and a mud bog is all there is to life. The sleep all day and drink/drug all night crowd. But there are those of us who see things differently and have opinions.
It is so very sad to some of us that there isn’t one spring or rise where the children can enjoy the out door life. Well, I'm glad you brought up the subject of no springs to swim in....and why is it that we no longer have springs, rises, creeks, ponds, to use for recreation?
Because we have a pulp mill that pumps 78 million gallons of water a day and then dirties it so badly that the workers who care are ashamed of it. The management is not ashamed, mind you, but there are many workers who care about the damage the mill does to the environment. The managers are only interested in the "bottom line" -- the profit margin.
I heard some guy call it "Profit & Greed" the other day, and that's so true.
Don't expect the springs to come back until so many millions of gallons of water stops being ruined by "Profit & Greed" every day.

The water we have lost is gone forever, like water flowing under a bridge. What is left is polluted. Some day everyone will regret what was done in the 1950's for the sake of "jobs". What should we expect from these industries now and for how long. Sooner or later they will close up and move on, but will not leave this commmunity in the shape they found it in. It all has a cost and it is up to us to decide if the benefit was worth the cost.

It would appear that some of these topics should be put to bed, however we need to continue the steady drip of information about the follies of the potentates, charlatans and related cronys until the fall elections. I hope it makes a difference and we send a few of the folks home from the school board, city council and county commission.

Oil spill...how is it going to affect our area. This seems to me a pretty important topic.

I can see it now, the bloggers on here will probably say that Dyal had the owners of the oil company hire all his cronies, he got them a job after their drop time went out. He e will be blamed for the spill because he had inexperienced people on the rig. If not him it had to Bummy, jack, or Buddy putting their buddies out there working. They will say that the groups should have to live on the rig, not close by. Maybe the coaches wives were working the rig. These guy's were putting monies in their back pocket by shipping drums of oil out the back door. ( by the way N
No That's the conclusion Fox News would come to. Dyal is only responsible for his failures, which are as obvious as the oil in the gulf.

And do not forget manuel checks, they will want to blame the oil workers for getting manual checks out the back door. Problem is out in the gulf, on a square platform, which way is the back door, N
Reply to thisI know it's a little early but how bout a discussion on future elections for 2012, particularly Sheriff and Property Appraiser

How about we discuss the repercussion of sinking of a South Korean naval vessel by, presumably, a North Korean submarine. Under the 1953 U.S.-R.O.K. Mutual Defense Treaty the U.S. is bound to come to S.K.'s aid should the conflict escalate. Sec of State Clinton has promised consequences for N.K. who has promised "all out war should any actions be taken against it... How should the U.S. and the rest of the world respond?

One election cycle at a time. I am very interested in the 2012 election as the ballot is pretty full, but we will give it its time, believe me.

Lord, let's get through this year's election first. How about a topic on why the tea-baggers are not protesting the rampant fraud, waste and honest services crimes so common in our county.

Mr. Moderator, please start a blog where we can discuss a newbie in politics, named Bud Chiles. I have read a little about him and it was a very pleasant read. He has a grassroots campaign started and it'll be interesting to see if he can follow in his dad's footsteps. Thank You for listening.

Or just about the governor's race in general

Bud Chiles has a great web site and facebook. I am walking with Bud!

Glad to see someone else is interested in Bud. I'm not quite on board yet but he's about to overtake my first choice. And since he is not affiliated with any political machine its a good reason to give him a good look. And he is doing a grassroots approach that is why I think he deserves a blog on just his behalf. If a general blog for the Governor's is appropriate for other comments let others have that also. This is a great place for a grassroots candidate so lets go with it.

There is a great article in today's Lakeland Ledger abour the walkin' campaign of Lawton Chiles in 1970 and how Bud's walkin' campaign of today may be misguided. The article states that campaigning in 1970 was when tv's were not important and a little know state senator, Lawton Chiles, from Lakeland got it right by walkin' and defeated a well know polititican with a lot of money. The walkin' in 2010 is in an era of many media outlets for political information according to the article. See the article at http://www.theledger.com/article/20100612/NEWS/6125029/1134?Title=Doubts-Cloud-Chiles-Campaign-Strategy . I liked Lawto Chiles and too are looking forward to learning more about Bud Chiles.

Big money can be defeated. By using the net, Facebook is where I found Bud, he can walk into your house and in turn you can walk with him to your friends house. Who ever thought we'd be traveling over to our friends and family with a mouse? Whether on election day I vote for Bud or not, my hope is that big money can be defeated by the little guy. It could change politics forever and but the rich back to having parties at their house and not on my expense in a government house I own.
