Taxpayers money and DMH.

How do you feel about the TCBCC using monies collected to bail out the hospital?  I know it hasn't happened yet, but I am sure it is inevitable.  Do you think they should, or not?  If you feel they should, when should they, what should it be used for and under what conditions, if any?  If not, please elaborate.

The TCBOCC should NOT bail out DMH. They were paying them a sizable subsidy for EMS on a monthly basis. The hospital needs to figure out how to get out of the red and back into the black on their own. The $17M hospital was supposed to bring JOBS into this community. Another white elephant?

Another white elephant, know that is hilarious. I wonder how many get that. I couldn't agree with you more. The county is required by law to provide an EMS department, but it is the DMH Corp. that signed the contract to provide hospital services. I doubt it had a clause that said until we can't, then the taxpayers can do it until we figure out how to do it right.

The county has to pay for EMS whether DMH runs it or not. If you really want to see things get expensive consider what will happen if the hospital closes!

EMS would have to quadruple in size in order to ship out patients whom would otherwise receive local care. At about $350,000.00 per ambulance per year your looking at an increase of about $1.4 Million annually.

I'm proud of the individual for doing your home work in reference to EMS and the amount that is given to the Hospital. Did the citizens realize that DMH requested the full amount of $300,000 for the fiscal year of 2008 and received without any problem. If Malcom Page had his way they would get everything they have asked for. I would like to thank Comm. Clay Bethea for his responsible voting on this issue. Mr. Bethea only asked for accountability and there is none at DMH currently. I don't know the new CEO, or where he came from, but he obviously has been mislead by COMMISSIONER PAGE in that he felt when asking the county for $500,000 dollars that there would be no problem. But thanks to the Clerk of the Court Annie Mae Murphy, immediately explained that we cannot give this amount of money without a public hearing. The hospital issues can be solved and it can be more financially sound with the right people in place.  The CEO's quick fix was to cut the middle class of salaries within DMH. What the general public does not understand is that it is a small drop in the bucket when you figure out what he is making. Although he gives the impression to the TACO TIMES that he is a team player, and that he is keeping everyone informed at DMH, is not true. I understand that most of the employees have no idea what's going on except their salaries were cut, and there bill collectors could care less with the exception to BCFCC. I think that was awesome.

If they have cut the paramedic's salaries and have not purchased new ambulances, can someone please explain to me where the subsidy money is? once again no accountability. Is the money being used to pay this new CEO or is it already been used in the operation cost of the hospital? I would love for this to be answered. I bet a state auditor can find out. The Board of County Commissioners should demand this information.

Where did the $$$ go? It went to pay hospital employees salaries. Its a race to see if your paycheck will bounce every pay period. The CEO gave away the helicopter in Perry and the one in Quincy. Probably the only two parts of the hospital that were making money.

Most counties help their hospitals. It looks like our Grant Writer would help out by searching and applying for grants to help the hospital through these rough times. If there was a horse trail or a marina to be built over at the hospital, it would be at the top of the Commissioner's agenda. What else is new?

While looking through the classified section of the local newspaper, I see that DMH is advertising for an EMS Director. What a shock! Is the current EMS Director still there and this is an anticipated vacancy? What about the Assistant Director? Is there such a position?

Yes the Director is still there, and he gave, I believe, a 30 day notice of resignation. All I will say is that he accepted a better job offer. I will leave any other details that he wants disclosed up to him. Yes there was an Assistant Director, held by Michael Lundy, but that position was cut, along with the "across the board" salary cuts recently, as part of the cost cutting measures the CEO has taken.

My question would be have they attempted to fill that position internally before openly advertising? I know Mr. Lundy still works there, has he not been offered the job? Seems logical to offer it to him first, then advertise internally, the openly.

Okay, let's all recognize the reason for the hospital. It's Buckeye. The mill can't operate without having a fully-functional hospital in the community, due to the hazardous chemicals used at the mill. The place is likely to blow up at any time, thus federal law requires that there be a hospital in operation as long as the mill operates. So, since Buckeye needs the hospital to remain open, Buckeye should pay its fair share of the costs - since many of the illnesses and diseases in the county are likely caused by the poison put into the water and air by the mill. when the P&G land sold, and when the mill "sold", no documentary stamps were paid in the courthouse....those doc stamps would go a long way in helping the county pay for the costs of the hospital. Just a suggestion....

nursecranky is it? Well I work at Buckeye as well as few hundred of the citizens of this county. I cant give you a 100% assurance that "place" will not blow up at any time but i can say unless you have some information, I mean factual not just the typical tree hugger B.S. we hear from the local wacko's but factual information like what law you referring to and what illnesses and diseases and for that matter what poisons. What you are referring to is what we have been trying to clean up and we have spent MILLIONS doing it. I don't know Doc stamps from postal stamps but I know B.S. when I hear it.

I saw a bumpersticker on a car the other day that said "U still drinking Buckeye's Kool-Aid" -- that must be the trouble. You need to read up and educate yourself when you are not at work. If you've cleaned up out there, nobody can tell it. You didn't get your money's worth. Everybody knows the cancer rate here in Perry is way too high. Where have you been?

So educate this poor little ole shift worker will you please. I have no formal edumacation after high school other than the University of the Marine Corps. Having family in medicine around these here parts and have asked them to give this poor unedumacated shift worker a place where I can go get this information that they nor I can find. Where are the numbers? Where are the facts that Buckeye has caused cancer? Did you not go to school and learn that we all have cancer cells running around our bodies from birth and later in life something triggers them to grow either benign or malignant. I mean thats what I was taught in 11th grade biology.
As for the clean up well I guess the opinion thing applies here. You know opinions are like...... The State and other agencies disagree with you. It may not be perfect or even completed yet but it has come a long way. Where have I been? Well for the last 10 years right here in our little corner of the planet. The rub for me is, If it is so bad here why are you here? Why do you risk cancer and all the other bad things that can happen from the "Buckeye Kool-Aid"? I mean at the rate of cancer here you might be next? Why stay? Why put yourself at risk? Just curious.

The standard health assessment model is three pronged. It includes three distinct areas of evaluation which are as follows.

    Genetics/inherited traits
    Lifestyle/ smoke drink, etc
    Environment/what are your exposures

Why is the environmental assessment always the one challenged and is it
acceptable to yell “WHACKO” and ignore the data. What’s the problem?

What was that famous quote Samuel Clemmons stole from that math guy? "There are lies, and there are damn lies, and then there's statistics"
Headline in local paper "FSU nurses to hold health fair in response to high cancer rates in Perry." Now I assume the local stats meet with your approval.

boohoo, Just because our local mullet rapper prints something on the front page does not in fact make it "a" fact.
I have know people who have had family here for 70+ years with no family members who had cancer that they can remember. I also know some to include my own who have had family members with cancer. We haven't always lived here so was it Perry or Buckeye that caused it or that pesky little biology fact about us all having cancer cells in our bodies? When I was just a wee little ole thang in "Luraville" on the Suwanee river and the wind was right we could smell the "Mill". Maybe that was it, that was the culprit that caused my momma to have cancer. Maybe it was the cigarettes smoking for over 35 years, or the alcohol she might have consumed or the whatever can go on and on. I will ask again. If it is so bad here, WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE?
Do you remember a fella named George Burns? He lived to a ripe old age of 99. He drank liquor, smoked and ate red meat every day. He was a very healthy and happy man. What of the three pronged model killed him?
Is any one of the prongs more healthier or deadlier than the other?
As for the "WHACKO" question. I cant answer it for you. I can say that as "non-politically correct" as it may be in this day and age, I still call it like I see it.
I don't ignore data, I just question the findings when they are skewed to fit the agenda of the person or group that is doing the research. On both sides, the for and against groups. We have just about wiped out the very thing that made this country what it is today. The simple use of "Common Sense".
I have a quote for you. It may not be from a well know writer (as he called his self "a hell of a liar") or a famous politician and heck I don't even remember who said it but it is as simple as it gets. It is simple common sense. "S*%T HAPPENS"!

Again, allow me to point out the obvious. You have followed me around this blog/forum responding to each and every post I made with “wit and sarcasm” now I could say I am scare of you that you could be a “cyber stalker” since I have no way to know exactly what your motives are. But I stand on fact not smack.

As for my post on opinions…you have made my point on both topics elegantly …And I thank you.

One: The ladies on US hwy 19 are in denial that their actions are causing harm to themselves and this community. Buckeye workers and supporters are in denial that their actions are causing harm to themselves and this community. The point was denial and you obviously missed the point.

Two: Opinions are not special everybody has one…And some people are one. Your “wit and sarcasm” has proved that point as well. The point was if opinion is all you have, and since every body has one, mine is as good as yours. But you missed that point.

When your facts are skewed and your position gets hard to defend you just scream shut up, leave me alone, and “skip it”.

Now the comment about that sucking sound is easily explained. Tax dollars are being siphoned along with natural resources while the “stakeholders” are left holding the bag.
There would be no “stakeholder” if public funding wasn’t used. There would only be stockholders in the equation… if public funding wasn’t necessary or applied for. Are you suggesting that wonderful company you work for is not receiving “corporate welfare in the form of “special needs considerations” or “exemptions of” regulations and law to continue operations?

Denial or just another witty and sarcastic opinion, is it smack or fact?

          boohoo,
First of all I have to say that you are the most conceited and arrogant person I have ever had the misfortune to communicate with. Do you really believe that you are so important that I or anyone would follow you around to read your misinformation? Get real. Get over yourself. My motives are simple. To state my opinion and stop misinformation or at least reply with truthful information.
You have replied to my post.
I replied to nursecranky on 5/23/08 @ 5:44 pm. YOU replied to me on 7/12/08 @ 2:40 pm.
          Who is "cyber stalking" who?

One: Denial? I have no denial that what we do in the paper making process has been harmful to the environment. I do believe that I have said so in other posts. I also know that we have spent MILLIONS to clean up what is possible to clean up and we are still looking for ways to improve. As for the hookers on 19, what are you referring to? I am sure that if you asked one the first thing they would say is I have to quit, I should not be doing this etc.

Two: I am well aware that every one has a opinion. I have no problem with opinions. I just miss the point when it comes to misinformation and lies.

My facts are skewed. Prove it. Prove that buckeye has not spent millions to improve the environment that it has messed up. I can prove we have. I believe that I have a pretty firm position on that and it is easy to defend.
Never have I screamed anything as you stated, or made the suggestion that you or anyone else "shut up" or "leave me alone". If you think my facts are skewed or wrong or that I am sowing misinformation, prove them wrong. Its real simple.
I have to say that you seem to blame a lot of the problems around here on buckeye. It seems that you have a "axe to grind" that goes way beyond environmental and monetary issues with my employer.
Yes that is the company that I work for. They may be getting tax exemptions and special needs considerations etc. The company that I work for is also the largest employer in the county.
They pay out the most in salary and benefits to tax paying citizens in this county as well as city residents.
Most of the employees are residents here so does that not make them a "stakeholder" as well?
          Smack or fact? Who knows?

To anyone else that reads this I want to apologize for taking up time on this issue with this person. If anything I have posted upset anyone or has angered you, I had no intention to.
