Shaken/Impact Baby Syndrome
By grievingmother:
I would like to raise awareness on Shaken/Impact Baby Syndrome. It is something that you hear mostly on TV occurring in 'big cities', until now. You never really think about it until it hits close to home. I never would've imagined that this would occur here {to us} being a 'good ole boy' town as I thought.

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. To lose a child is devastating, I know.
Sometimes from tragedy there comes opportunity.
In this case I hope, when your grief has healed a little, you can speak to the Health Dept. to give classes at the High School to boys and girls about Shaken/Impact Baby Syndrome.
I hope the Health Dept is counseling young mothers in the disastrous results that can happen from shaking a baby.
It all seems so innocent and harmless to shake a tiny one a little, when they are out of sorts, with out realizing what the consequences are.
It doesn't matter who you are or where you live, or your status in life this can happen to anyone.
Again my sincere sympathy to you and your family.

Thanks.
Our baby is thankfully alive and well. A PURE MIRACLE!!!!!!
No arrests have been made, YET.
We pray everyday 'justice for our baby'
In reference to your comment "it seems so innocent"....this form of abuse is a split second devistating decision. It is unpredictable when evaluating family dynamics. It is not caused by playful toss in the air or bouncing on the knee. It is violent. So violent it causes brain hemoragges, retinal hemoragges, hematomas, fractures, bruising, and in most cases death. Every person of profession that has been taking care of our baby and this investigation say that this is the first one that they have seen alive without obvious damage, still to young to see long-term damage.
It makes the coping and the road to recovery that much harder when we know who, when, where but we still see them everyday bar-hopping now. But it's not over yet, the case is still open. The most important thing is that our baby is alive.

That is wonderful and a blessing that your child is OK. I can not imagine the emotions you and your family have experienced from someone hurting your child, from anger to sadness. I can't imagine the restraint you have to keep to stop yourself from giving it back. Do not give up and continue to fight for justice for your child. I want to tell you that you and your family are welcome to come here and discuss this issue whenever and however you want. I know that it helps sometimes to vent and there are people that frequent this site that will "listen" and offer what they can. God bless your family.

I'm confused....is this the situation that occured a while back or another incident that has recently occured. I am asking because there was another "babysitter" incident that happened in the not to distant past.

I apologize that I can't go into to much detail. But can you tell me what you know. You may have indeed heard our story through the "Great Vine"

The only incident that I am aware of was more than 6 months ago. Last I heard from a "family member" of the accused was that she was found not guilty. I later heard from a family member of the infant that the investigation was underway and should be finalized soon.
I take interest in this as I am going to be looking for a babysitter for a newborn shortly and am scared to death because I have never left an infant with anyone other than my own family. I dont like the idea at ALL but have no choice as I have to return to work.

I understand how you feel for I felt that way before I even gave birth. All I can suggest is to first
>Check all references.
>There must be a way to check and see if the person you are chosing hasn't been in the DCF system.
>Always, Always, Always go with your gut instinct.
>Try Arbor Care.
I believe it's in the phone book. They can refer you to STATE Cerified babysitters.
>Be sure to go over senarioes with them of what to do and not to do.
The incident you know about is not our situation. Ours is different. The important thing is that it does happen here and to be extra cautious.

I am thankful that your child survived. I do believe that Shaken Baby Syndrome is sometimes alleged when it is untrue. I am not sure if all of the Shakne Baby Syndrome theory is accurate but I do feel you can injure a child by shaking. I do not feel a child can be shook to death without there being spinal cord and/or neck injuries. I pray that your child gets progressively better and if someone actually was abusive then I pray that they are forgiven by you for in the long run this will help you more than the forgiveness would help the person responsible. I am so very sorry this happened to you and am thankful that your child is alive. God Bless.

Just to ask...Did your child have any recent immunizations right before the symptoms appeared? Any feeding problems or poor sucking ability displayed before being taken to the hospital?
