Jobs????

Topic emaiiled today:

Where are all the jobs at and what is the county doing about it?

I have been here for over 9 years and I constantly see good clean industry going to surrounding counties.  With unemployment climbing to over 10% in our county, it's time that someone stepped up and got busy.  I am tired of seeing our young people leave Taylor County to seek employment in other areas.  Something has to be done.

Well the "system" is broke and we taxpayers are paying for a system rife with cronys and waste! There is not much we can do with the fascist organizations such as the TCDA, Chamber and BOCC! How can we "step up", please enlighten us. Old with the old Bassett and Breer and in with some new blood and ideas! This has been discussed many times!

Jobs. Education. Jobs. Education. Tey are both dependent on the other. We cannot improve our education system, "clean" business and industry are not going to locate in a community that lacks basic education of the workers / workforce. I am no defender or fan of TCDA, Breer or any other of the potentates, but maybe this is the reason that we only attract "dirty" business and industry no other county in Florida or South Georgia wants. I agree that we need to totally rework the communities approach to attracting and retaining jobs. The current composition of TCDA, the Chamber and other groups had had a very long time to make a positive difference in our community and has not. It is time for a change, a new direction for Perry and Taylor County. Let's start with new folks at these organizations and not keep the current slate of cronys. Breer needs to go, Dawn Taylor needs to go, the current "appointed" Board members of the TCDA need to go and the Chamber membership needs to hold an honest election of their Board members. With these changes, maybe some overall positive changes can occur to improve the community.

Education and industry are tightly woven together. The problem is, there's a Catch-22 we've got to work around; industry (at least not the kind of industry we'd hope for) won't come in unless we can provide a well-educated workforce, but we can't provide a deep pool of well-educated job candidates until there's more industry here to keep them around.

To be honest, I don't know what the answer is. Maybe we have to start by building on what we currently DO have--which is plenty of reasonably-priced land and relatively low operating costs.

Any suggestions on industries for which these two factors would be enticing?

Paul and Lee, put up or shut up. I, for one, see no evil lurking in our appointed and elected boards. These people contribute (some for pay, some for free) their time and energy to make our county a better place only to be unfairly maligned by this website and ilk like you.

There isn't a single person on these boards that prefer "dirty" jobs, or poor education. They simply try to take advantage of whatever opportunity presents itself.

This website and its need-a-life mudslingers do their best to ensure that no one of any quality will ever come here. They portray our community as a nut-filled political boundary of NIMBYS and malcontents.

You have a constitutional right to be blow-hards, but by doing so, you create self-fulling prophecies about our collective future.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

I think all of us here want to see the website taken seriously as a forum to discuss issue affecting Taylor County, but in order for that to happen we have to do more than just complain and make accusations about people.

I've done my share of complaining here, to be sure--but my complaints are generally very specific, and offer alternatives. And I'm very, VERY cautious about questioning the motives of our county's leaders, even when I thoroughly disagree with their decisions. With few exceptions, I believe most of them are doing the best job they're capable of.

It's fair game to discuss whether their best job is good enough, and it's fair game to discuss any specific, indivual action they take. But general complaints and broad, vague accusations aren't particularly helpful.

Do not be naive, evil does "lurk", evil is there plain and simple. Look at the member list of these organizations! These "people" have served and have not done a job of increasing jobs in our community, job growth has been negative. Many opportunities have passed our community by due to these "people". In terms of "nut-filled", that would describe those organizations previously identified. If the charlatans and self appointed potentates would step aside then maybe others could step up and "lead".

As an example, the perpetual reappointment of duds (we all know who they are and their agendas) on these boards, the keeping of "safe" board members as noted in the past, the lack of any performance objectives for these groups who receive tax payer funds, the lack of an annual report to the community on what has been accomplished (not the tabloid money maker that our newspaper prints and profits from), and many other examples in the archived pages of this blog.

Our community can hardly be called a NIMBY, because we would sell the whole community for a few low wage jobs and a company that no other community in North Central Florida would have. It is telling that the one or two projects that the TCDA has actually had in the last ten years has generate resolutions against the project from every other North Florida county. That should tell you something.

As far as "malcontents", you have perfectly described the way a majority of our community feels about the TCDA, Chamber and those individuals "for pay, for free". They all are volunteering for a reason. The only blow-hards seen recently have been coming in and out of the courthouse, the Capital City Bank building and Chamber offices. Why not a discussion on the recent audits of these organizations and throw in what the number of jobs created vs. money invested. Now that would be a put up or shut up moment. I challenge the organizations to do just that!

But there's a difference between leaders who are "duds" and those who are "evil." People who are duds do the wrong thing out of ingorance or inability, whereas people who are evil do the wrong thing out of greed or malice.

That's why we must be very cautious about questioning leaders' motivation. If someone is going to accuse a leader of *intentionally* doing something wrong, they'd better have evidence to back it up.

Evil or Duds most of the time the results are the same, I agree most of our problems are caused by Duds. I also think you should be very sure before accusing someone of something, but there is a difference in questioning and accusing, many times questions that seem to have no relevance bring out what is really going on. Just for an example though, why do you think the Hospital Board didn't want their equipment purchase put out for bid?

TO: Appreciative: You seem to be from another planet and seem to be an advocate of incompetency. Name one job the TCDA has created. The blogmaster is not intimated by your legalese. Hopefully you're not an attorney (another class of questionable characters).

Evil comes in many forms - omisson, cronyism, rumor spreading, negligence, coverups and plain bad judgement. This web site doesn't malign anyone, it is simply a forum for opinions. Speaking of education - those guys are doing a terrific job, laying off teachers and others, cutting salaries, poor student performance, not bringing Oscar Howard to task for creating this mess.

The BOCC and the county administrator doing a great job - where is the plan and list of projects for when the stimulus money comes our way?

The city and county devising new fees, increased fees from a lack of planning all to serve giving the working pople another grand screwing. Unemployment in the county above 12%. Yes evil does lurk in our halls of government, schools, chamber, TCDA and other "agencies".

Our county and city officials make our prophecies come true - not honest and frank debate.

Well in the history of TCDA the following has been common knowledge: (1) a TCDA board member who had an interest in the lumber industry telling a fiber board manufacturing prospect that there was no lumber and related resources in the region, (2) a TCDA Board member giving a confidential business plan of a prospect to a local competitor, (3) a TCDA board member notifying then Florida Power of a prospect, killing the deal, and (4) TCDA Board members looking at the land contiguous to a proposed development for an "investment".

This sure seems "evil" to me, profiting from inside knowledge. I am not accusing any current member(s) of this ethical breech, by simply pointing out that the opportunity for evil exists when member(s) want to keep out competition for the limited labor pool, competition for local natural resources and in the promotion of self interest/benefit.

ZTo imply that this has not happened in the past and could not happen in the future is simply absurd.

A question-Is it true that relatives of Rick Breer and/or Dawn Taylor have benefited from these groups to set up businesses at Sportscaraft or other locations in the community? I doo not recall any marketing campaign to offer a simular "deal" to exisiting business or industry or anyone in the community who would like to start a business. Again, if this is true it is what I would call local insider trading.

    Dear Anonymous,

Are you stupid enough to believe that phrasing a defamatory comment as a question some how insulates you from liability for defamation or false light? If so, let me be clear: it doesn't.

Nor is your identity as anonymous as you believe. It is simply one subpoena away from being revealed by your ISP.

Good luck with that. Let me know how it works out for you.

I don't know what to offer, but will say that I would move to Taylor County in a heartbeat, but there aren't any good jobs there. However, something is wrong with the local picture. I live in one of the lowest unemployment areas in the nation in a semirural area where good jobs go begging. Yet, the area has many of the same qualities as Taylor County. Let me name some:

    a. Good work ethic
    b. People just want to work. Not looking for a handout.
    c. Family values
    d. People do not sue over every little thing like in big urban areas.
    e. Comparatively low taxes.
    f. Plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities.

So, I can't figure out why the unemployment rate is so high in Taylor. It does have lots of qualities to attract good companies and jobs. Something is missing, but I will leave it to others to figure out what it is.

Taylor County tried to create jobs by bringing in the coal mine, however, people complained because they thought it would "pollute" our air. The only problem is that nobody did their research on these and it was moved to a different county.

The problem is that everyone wants Taylor County to grow, however nobody wants people to come in. Everyone seems to think that Perry will in-breed and multiply on its own, but I hate to tell you that if you want something done, then do it yourself. The County Commissioners, City Council, or any other development cannot create jobs. They don't have that power. If you are so concerned with jobs, then open your own business and hire these people yourselves.

Historically, 75% of new jobs are created by exisiting business and industry. This is what has always been touted by the economic development community. One has to wonder why the TCDA and others do not spend 75% of thier time on helping grow jobs with existing business and industry. When Breer and groups like TCDA spend all of their time chasing unrealistic things it is a waste of resources. I am a business owner and sad to say there are not 50 people in this county wanting to work, ask around. If you drug tested the exisiting workforce you would have to fire about 50% of the workforce. Any "new" employer would only take workers from exisiting busness and industry. These are some of the issues that really, really keep our community from growing jobs!

Here's an article about rural outsourcing--outsourcing services to low-cost, rural areas in the U.S. rather than overseas:

    http://money.cnn.com/2010/07/08/smallbusiness/rural_onshoring/index.htm

This seems like the type of movement Taylor County ought to be participating in. We have a vocational school, a community college, and three universities nearby to help train workers for it. We have a low cost of living and operating, which means that costs to the company that's buying the outsourced services would stay reasonable.
