TCSD FCAT Writing Scores

FCAT Writing scores have been released for Florida school districts, and Taylor County showed improvements in all three grade levels.

The exam is given to students in 4th, 8th, and 10th grade. Students can score between a 1.0 and a 6.0 on the test, and a score of 3.5 is considered "on grade level."

At TCES, 79% of 4th graders scored 3.5 or higher—up from 71% last year. The state average was 85%.

At TCMS, 95% of 8th graders scored 3.5 or higher—up from 76% last year. The state average was 90%.

At TCHS, 73% of 10th graders scored 3.5 or higher—up from 66% last year. The state average was 77%.

Congratulations to everyone at those schools!

Let me also add that of those 95% at TCMS, 12 had a perfect score of 6; last year there was only 1. Congratulations to Ms. Fent and Mrs. Wetherington! I also want to give a shout out to Mrs. Puhl who is doing an exceptionally fantastic job of wearing both hats of principal and asst. principal.

Since Ms. Puhl is doing such a fantastic job as both principal and asst. principal, maybe the supt. and district should save the district some money by not hiring suzanne bassett as the asst. principal next year (09/10). Especially since so many annual contract teacher positions are on the line.

I'm not sure that would be wise; the state has made staffing recommendations based on the sizes of schools, and a school the size of TCMS is recommended to have both a principal and an assistant principal. I can't imagine running an organization that size (whether a school or a private company) without an assistant.

As for who gets the job, though, that's a whole separate ball of wax...

I agree, congrats to all the kids. Maybe the kids in these grades can possibly do something other than fcat stuff for half the year.

The main purpose is to educate students.
but the teachers is playing a disciplinary role and there hands is tied the kids get left behind. That is why so many kids are going to private school to get a education, now let me tell you what is unfair, paying taxes and getting nothing in return, the bad students are the one getting a education because they get put into a small room while a struggling student falls behind and thats ok with the admin because they dont wont to loose there funding.
