Open Letter To Politicians
Many of us complain about our elected official's behavior, decisions, actions and lack thereof, myself included, and beg for a real person to run and take office. The problem is when that happens, we tend to put the same ones back in and then it deters any other people that truly want to do the job that the office asks of them from stepping up and running, not to mention the dragging through the mud that happens. Our county is probably one of the worst for this type of behavior and tend to vote popularity, etc., instead of for someone that truly wants to represent the people and do the job. I am only writing this because of recent postings regarding local officials and the actions they overlook.
Having said that, I received an email today with a link about an open letter that was written by a citizen and then read on the Glenn Beck Program. I will admit I had no idea who Glenn Beck was and realized why when I saw his show is on the Fox News Channel. I used to only watch Fox News because I thought they had the best overall coverage, but was so turned off by their biased election coverage that I quit watching. Anyway, regardless of that, I read the letter and I couldn't help, for the most part, to completely agree with the writers points and issues. I know this letter is directed mainly at Congress, but I also felt the message applied all the way down to the local level. The link to the letter on Glenn Beck's site is here for those that want to read it. Thanks for participating and feel free to post your thoughts here.

Frank Russell, while a lot of people didn't like was one person that got the job done and he didn't care which district you lived in. He recieved a lot of bad press from the local paper, but his heart was in the job and he did a lot of good for the county. I never lived in his district but would vote for him if I did live there. Well Done Frank!

Frank Russell; I do not care if you liked him or not, You knew where he stood for better or worse. He was honest with you whether he was for or against you or an issue. That is kind of honesty we need from local politicians/potentates. Anything less, well...you see what we have now. I rarely agreed with Krank Russell, but always understood that he, in is own way, wanted what was best for Taylor County. Yes he may be a bit of a snake oil saleman, but he was our snake oil salesman!

As a life long resident of Taylor county I have seen many politicians come and go over the years and for some reason we seem to have the most problems with inept county commissioners. Ever once in a while I attend a commission meeting and I am embarrassed by the actions or inactions of my commissioners. They tend to ramble and have a problem with getting to the point and seem unprepared on various subject matters. Its obvious that some issues are decided before the meeting as as soon as the chairman reads the agenda item there is a motion, a second and a immediate majority vote without affording the citizens attending the meeting the opportunity to comment on the subject should they desire to do so. This is pork chop politics at its best. The majority of the time you cannot hear what is said as the PA system is not used by the commissioners. The county administrator many times responds or makes recommendations to the commission without utilizing the podium mike which is the only mike that seems to be working. I believe that it is his job to insure that the entire PA system is working whereas you and I can at least hear whats going on. If five commissioners and one county administrator cannot understand that we the citizen would like to hear what is being said then Taylor county has a serious problem with county government. If we are denied the opportunity to comment on a subject why then should we waste our time in attending a commission meeting at all. We deserve better.

Very good points Concerned Citizen2. I have not attended a BOCC meeting in some time after getting frustrated with the total ineptness of the group. I think Jack Brown could do wonders with the BOCC if he had a better group to work with. I am concerned with what appears to be the personal agendas of the individual commissioners. The BOCC exist to serve the citizens and those who elected the BOCC in the first place. When an issue comes up that is a hot issue, the BOCC have been "coached" or "bought" and appear to forget the citizens and those who elected them to the office. Then there are BOCC members that appear so unprepared, it is sad. Like the comedian Ron White says, "You can get things fixed all over your body...but you cannot fix STUPID!"

Amen, you got that right! Putz, Dumb and Dumber, ect....If we have hig stakes testing for our children, why not for school board members, the super and his "team". I am not joking, but I seriously doubt a few of these folks could pass a TABE test to take a corrections class. How can a person who is not computer literate, reads on an eigth grade level or lower and cannot read a financial report bring anything positive to any governmental entity (School Board, City Council and/or BOCC) in this county? And this goes for all of the potentates and/or the charlatans in the courthouse as well. This county is going to have to start electing individuals with an education or even the ability to learn and comprehend. I do not think everyone needs a college education, there are plenty of those with an education that are dumb as a post (SAO and Public Defenders Office), but our local elected officials have to have an ability to think critically, ability to read a financial report, and many other things to fullfill their fiduciary responsibilities. Anything less in not acceptable. We are in the 21st Century, not the 1950's! Now that I got that off my chest I am going to have some potted meat or french fried potatoes-with mustard!

Your so right, but in Taylor County we vote for the grandson of the man that helped our grandpa catch hawgs. Until a majority of voters decide to vote for anybody but the incumbent, things will stay the same. People that have the ability to do the job, won't run because, they don't want to have to put their family through a Taylor County Election. It's been proven time and again in Taylor County, when someone with a little intelligence runs against one of the idiots, they and their families are run through the mud, all about things that don't have one thing to do with the position they are running for. Then once they have proven they are more than capable of doing the position, and have put up with all the mud slinging, once again Taylor County voters put the idiot back in by a 51% majority. I don't understand it I never will, once the idiot is back in office and proving once again he is really an idiot, you won't find one person that voted for him. So untill we can break this cycle I'm afraid we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

You are correct! I have personal knowledge of this from a Taylor campaign. It is criminal what goes on in an election and it starts in the courthouse! If you wanted to give the county a laxative or enema you would start on the third floor of the courthouse and move down to the second floor, then to the first!!!

maybe we should do like ga and have one commissioner,at the least itd be cheaper.itd probably be as corrupt but at least we wouldnt be paying five people to do nothing like we do now.ive seen many commissions in my almost 60 years the current one is the worst ive ever seen.they dont seem to do anything except createa county administrator position,i dont rember ever voting on at least the city voted the city manager form of govt in.we didnt get that luxury. from what ive seen its not working .i think id vote for one commissioner for several reasons ,at least wed have one to keep an eye on instead of five elected and one appointed now

I do not feel the term "idiot" is appropriate in describing the commissioners as idiots they are not. The use of this term is going to far and some readers may in fact strive to consider the source. Speak to specifics, voice your displeasure or disagreements in their actions, offer alternatives but keep the personal mud slinging out of it. To infer ineptness or the inability to perform their duties, lack of concern or the inability to comprehend the present or long reaching effects of their decisions I feel is appropriate for debate.
Reply to this
Ineptness, Inability to perform, Lack of Concern, Unable to descern the effects of their descisions on the present or future, it's quicker just to say idiot, sorry if that offends you, but the only time any of our commissioners seem to be on the ball, is when it concerns them personally, or some of their relatives or friends. Sorry but if you look around this blog you'll see quite a few examples of that. Same with the school board.

You may be to inept to fulfill the positions you talk so harshly about, you may have run and the voters showed you that, do not be so fast to complain until you walk in their shoes, just an opinion.

So I assume from your answer or answers if all the anonymous comments are yours that your perfectly happy with the way things are run in Taylor County. That no one should complain or challenge anything that goes on, and if they do they should run for office. Because we know the voters of Taylor County will put them in office if they have a clean past record, or never got caught, if they prove they have good progressive ideas, and the intelligence to get them done. If that's your answer or opinion, the voting majority haven't done it very many times in the recent past. In thinking it through though, there are some new commissioners that haven't really been there long enough to criticize too harshly, so idiot may not be the proper term for them.

Taylor County is NOT progressive my any means.
Reply to this
You are absolutely right, Taylor County is not progressive. The meaning of the word is:
Favoring progress, wanting improvement or reform in government, business, etc. advancing to something better.
When there are people who are proud to be a box of rocks, and statements made about the tea parties, and statements about people having only 8th grade education, it is obvious that these are the folks that hold the county back. They don’t want change as they like the status-quo.
If they took the time to educate themselves about the program, it is not “tea bagging” it is getting like minded people together to re-form that more perfect union that our founding fathers thought so important. They had the vision. As Oswald Chambers said
“There is a difference in holding on to a principle and having a vision.
A principle does not come with moral inspiration but a vision does. People with idealistic principles rarely do anything. But wherever there is a vision there is a life of honesty,
and integrity because the vision gives us the moral incentive.”
That is what a “tea party” is – holding a vision that somehow a difference can be made in the grassroots by “we the people.”
If paying higher and higher taxes (Taxed Enough Already, TEA) as time goes on, and see the children and grandchildren of this nation saddled with debt then silly ukeep the “attitude”. If you want real change then I suggest that you put some effort where your mouth is and help to make it better, at all levels of government.
Taxes on city, county, state and national levels will all be raised. Do we just fight DC, or is it our responsibility to see that run-a-way spending is not going on locally?
Perhaps owing your share of the national debt(on July 21) $37,805.56, doesn't matter, but it does to me.
The National debt is $11,605,071,886,845.26. Can you (sillyu) even say that number? That 37K would keep a family off of welfare and they could afford health insurance, -- Where does our share of that go? Oh, I almost forgot, to pay the interest we owe China for her generous loans.

And to pay for a War in Iraq, and to pay Halliburton, and to bailout Goldman Sachs, because these are some of the reasons we've had to borrow from China. All the while our Health care and Insurance costs have skyrocketed. Madd Mom I believe you and most of the local people that attended and organized the Taylor County Tea Party are sincere, but some of the National Leaders, and talking heads on tv, that have been so vocal about the Tea Parties, are the same ones that lead, and were cheerleaders for, the policies that got us where we are today. I hope your group can make a change locally, but I'm afraid some in the group may be using it to promote themselves politically. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the reminder, which most over look in their eagerness to promote local "special interest" which takes advantage of us all through grants. Poor/welfare person(s) do not have access to steal millions but some do. Now who could that be adding debt to an already strapped/in recession economy. But you should complain about the 3 million paid to the lobbyist for IFAS/Cosa the 18.3 million grant to the local job supplier who failed to ask what kind of jobs this community wants. Your tax monies spent in this county promotes special interest. Maybe you should ask your grandchildren how they feel about that.

I agree that this person is not a box of dumb rocks, he/she has a lot of knowledge and I would hope they choose to share it. If data like this is out then the county/city/state can be questioned on it. I suppose if you don't go to budget meetings you never know what is going on behind closed doors.
As to "tea parties" being used to foster "political agendas" I would hope not (silly me) but if that is the case then the purpose of the events loses it meaning. They are suppose to be non-political. Something like that would have to be nipped in the bud!
Reply to this
I assure everyone that the Tea Party had nothing to do with political agendas. We are just concerned citizens trying to get our country back on the right track and not be taxed until we are over our heads in debt. Only one person involved, that I know of, ever ran for political office in the past - and he was out of town the day of the Tea party.
We are having another meeting on 9/12 with the focus of trying to bring our country back to the unity that she had after 9/11 and protect this nation by bringing us back to the Constitution and the principles that this country was founded on.
Reply to this
My problem is that I don't believe the constitution is interpreted properly all the time, I'm sure there have been some decisions that you think weren't in keeping with what the writers wanted. So are you suggesting that we don't interpret the constitution in the light of modern times, or that we only use the interpretations that you agree with? How are we to know what the Founding Fathers wanted, we can only go by history, I didn't see anything about Jefferson fathering a child with a slave in my history books, so we are back to interpretation, again does that have to agree with what you think to be the correct interpretation?
Reply to this
I'm not saying I am the authority on Constitutional interpretation, because I'm not. The Constitution was set up to have a balance of power in government, so no one branch controlled everything. Just one example that I believe is not in keeping with that is the "czars" that have been appointed and are answerable only to the President with no input from Congress.
When I hear something that I think is not in keeping with the principles that this country was founded on I pray, because this country was founded on Godly principles and all the authors of the Constitution agreed on that.

Godly principles, read the bible, Jesus preached help the poor, give away your money, It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
To the rich young ruler, give all you have to the poor, and follow me.
Are these not Godly Principles?
I didn't mean you were a Constitutional authority, but it's funny to me the Bush Czars were ok, it's alright for them to answer to the president only, but not this Administration. This is what I'm asking you, are the interpretations of the Constitution that you agree with always ok, but the ones you disagree with are wrong. Just answer that.
Reply to this
I didn't agree with the Bush "czars" either.
Yes, we definitely are supposed to help those in need, But - The Bible also says if any man will not work, neither let him eat. Too many people "play" the system for a free ride. If people (families) and the churches did what they were supposed to do scripturally, we wouldn't need welfare.
Reply to this
If I were stealing your money I would blame it on others. Stealing or lying its all the same. What I see as worst than being poor or needy is stealing out of the poor box.
It is a proven fact that the vendors and suppliers of services to the poor/welfare people you speak of fraud the system out of ten times the amount that the poor have, untill you realize the blame game is a tool to turn the attention away from the real bad people you are simply profiling the poor.

To the rich young ruler(s), give all you have to the poor, and follow me.
Now, that seems logical when a new religion was trying to establish its self.
Applied to today it would mean (to me) that the cats in DC give up all that
they have. Their nice pay raise, health ins., cars, etc etc. and give it away to the poor. Ah! what a blessing --- no new taxes, no health insurance program, no cap and trade. We might even be out of debt, but I doubt it.
Then they can follow -- but I have my doubts about that "young ruler", I don't believe he subscribes to the same basics of religion that you (or I) do.
Based on the facts that he (1) canceled the National Day of Prayer, (2) would not allow a fly over for the day honoring the service men/women of this country, (3) has he attended any church services (other than Easter) in town?
Please list the Czars that Bush had, that answered to him only.
Checks and balances are in three parts, the Legislative, Judicial and.
And the Executive branch.

Faithfully executes the laws of the United States
Executes the instructions of Congress
May veto laws but the veto may be overridden by Congress by a 2/3 majority.
Executes the spending authorized by Congress
Executes the instructions of Congress when it declares war or makes rules for the military
Declares states of emergency and publishes regulations and executive orders
Appoints judges with the advice and consent of the Senate

Has the power to grant pardons for crimes against the United States

The Bible says what it says, you can interpret it any way you want. The same with the Constitution, or the Founding Fathers, you my friend just proved my point about your group. If it doesn't prove what you want proved, or say what you want said, then change the meaning, or interpretation, untill it does. The passage of scripture has nothing to do with Obama, it has to do with selfishness, and greed, and what some people will give up to keep their wealth. This is why I asked about interpretation, I see how you interpret the Bible, can I expect any better on the Constitution, or Founding Fathers?

This letter is on the tea party site. Not being able to read is one thing, but I did not know y'all could not count. 350 supporters is really 35 to 45 showed up at party. Fuzzy math like counting local clubs by name inferring that the "K,R,MS,CoC,are all different when the members are all the same. Counting the same 9 people five times does not equal 45. So silly.

I believe all elected offices should have term limits PERIOD.
Reply to this
I've never been a fan of term limits, and have found the arguments for them to be uncompelling.
The basic logic seems to be that voters are too dumb to vote bad politicians out of office, so ALL politicians--good or bad--should be forced out of office after a period of time.
Now, I'll agree that voters often make uninformed and questionable decisions at election time. But that's the trade-off you make in a democracy; for better or worse, the decision is in the hands of the voters.
Term limits will push a good politician out of office just as easily as a bad one, don't guarantee that the next person to hold that office will be any good, and take the decision away from voters.
So what's the point?

Another thought is this; this is an opinion/viewpoint vehicle operating on the information super highway. A virtual speedway of ideas and thoughts exchanged between contributors. In my humble/simple opinion it is not intended to be used as a boxing ring designed to promote sparing matches between disgruntled political party supporters.
The written word is less flexible due to reader’s assumptions of what others are saying because the non verbal communication we know as inflection is missing. It is only words folks. I am reminded of the common sense instruction given to me as a child and you may have learned the same lessons. “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names can never hurt me” remember that lesson? If little Johnny sticks his head in the oven will you do it too, remember?

But they don't, that's the problem, most people that don't work, are already on Medicaid. It's the working poor that can't afford Health care, and Insurance, something your group seems to be opposed to. It seems to me, what your saying is you didn't like the way Bush did things but you didn't have a public outcry like this, but now you've found your voices. You want Godly principles followed, but only the ones you choose. The Deficit and Borrowing from Social Security, Medicare, China, ect has been going on for at least the past 8 years, but now you've found your voices. Well bless your pea-pickin hearts. My Pappy always told me never mix religion and politics together, and here
you all are, blessings in disguise, prying open Pandora's box.
If having affordable health care is for all, that is fine. My objection is that the "dunder heads" in DC, haven't a clue of what they are voting on. Now if they included themselves in this "wonderful" bill I might have a slight change of heart. If they stopped exempting the unions, that might be another plus. If they discovered how the run the VA, Medicare, Medicaid, SS, and all other gov't run programs efficiently that would carry slightly more weight. BUT to hap-hazardly sign 1000 pages of text into law on to the unsuspecting public is down right sinful, and I would like to add unlawful (but not).
I called my insurance company to see what a impact this would have on my insurance, and they can not tell me word one. "We have to wait and see what the bill reads". Opps, to late, sorry you no longer have coverage. Thanks heaps!!!!
As for interpretation of quotes it would be wise to use the entire quote and not just the portion that “fits” your position best., Jesus saying -
"If you want to be perfect, you still lack one thing. Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me."”
A question was asked, “where were we 4-8-12 years ago?” Good question, and
I suspect busy with day to day activities, and the times did not
impact us as they do today. We were comfortable with the situations (and life style)and it appeared that the government was doing an ok job for our country and our personal selves.
However, now seems to be the time for Ecclesiastes 3.7 ”a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence and a time to speak.”
We will not be the silent majority any more. To much has passed from the minority fostering their beliefs. Stand up and be counted!!

Thats great you ask your insurance company, as if your health is their greatest concern and not profits. The greatest country on earth can not produce a healthy workforce b/c why?
I am so glad you are concerned about you now I don't have to worry about your treatment. I can spend my time worrying about those truly in need.I guess you missed the part about "love thy neighbor as thyself".
Reply to this
I asked my insurance company how this would impact THEM, and eventually me. I know they are a profit making business, and thank goodness run efficiently that my health care is as good as I pay for. What is that old saying? Forewarned is forearmed.
I am not asking you to worry about my treatment, so you can have a clear conscience spending your time as you see fit.
Those truly in need -- get my vote for help. That is the key word, "truly". Love they neighbor as thyself. No I did not miss it! How many neighbors do you take to the store, doctors appointments, feed, give money too? Are you really willing to work to support the neighbor that sits home doing nothing? Are willing to have your taxes raised and your retirement dwindle away, so you have to work until the grim reaper appears on your doorstep? I (for one) am not.
The health care system needs to include families that are truly trying to make a go of it.
I don't think drunks, drug addicts, or prostitutes should be (unless they cleanup their act and qualify like getting food stamps), or lawsuits allowed for tobacco use. The above are social/economic conditions that one chooses for his/her self and we the people should not have to be made to pay for it.
gov't employees should NOT be exempt nor unions.
Where in this bill is eye care, dental, chiropractic care, prescriptions, specialty care ie: nursing homes, hospitals, hospice, in-home care, health clinics etc etc, mentioned? Salary raises for qualified health professionals (not doctors) but the skilled care needed in the general day-to-day care of patients.
I understand the bill is now on line.
Please read it and report back, to us that oppose the bill on its non-merits, what you feel is so wonderful as to put us all in debt (and our great-great grandchildren).
Why can't this country produce a healthy workforce? Are you raising cabbages? Produce? Try taking fast food off the plate, followed by drugs and alcohol. Then all the junk food -- chips, soda, cookies and ready made stuff. Granted there are plenty of people who would love to work that can not because of a myriad of reasons, but to say a healthy workforce; would the health care bill provide this?
No bill needs a 1000 pages, it should be kept simple and to the point, so everyone can read it and more importantly understand it;so it doesn't take a room full of lawyers to decide how to interpert it. (there is that word again - interpertation).

No not if he wanted to be perfect, if he wanted eternal life. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, you will have treasure in heaven, Then come follow me. When he heard this he was very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Not about Obama, but what people will give up to keep their money. As far as keeping silent, Social Security has been borrowed from by every President since LBJ, when there is a democratic president in office the republicans say this is wrong, but when it's a Republican in office everything is fine. Same with the Democrats, they're both the same thing, they both have equal responsibility for the situation we are in now.

Remember the comment made about the 52 states of America during the campaign?
51st state, in American political discourse, is a phrase that refers to areas either seriously or derisively considered candidates for addition to the 50 states already part of the Union. Before 1959, when Alaska and Hawaii joined the U.S., the term "the 49th state" was used.
"51st state", when used in a negative sense, can refer to independent nations which are, or are perceived to be, under excessive U.S. influence or control. In Australia, Canada, and Europe (perhaps most significantly in Canada), people who believe their local and/or national culture has become too Americanized sometimes use the term "51st state" in critical reference to their respective countries. The pejorative term 51st stater usually refers to non-U.S. residents who emulate mannerisms and culture of an American, or a non-American politician who is a supporter of the United States, especially its foreign policy, to a degree viewed as excessive
There is not a "52nd" and further in fact a "51st" state of 'The United States of America'. There are the 48 continental states, plus Hawaii, and Alaska.
Arguments state that people in the states are not educated enough and presume there are 52 rather than 50, being there are 50 continental, plus Hawaii, and Alaska. A false statement?
Another source confronts the idea of the UK(United Kingdom), Israel are states of America, or other countries as candidates. Which, is also a false statement.
Sometimes there is more truth in jest, than we care to admit.

And that’s just one example of how Barack Obama used to be very comfortable speaking up for and being associated with Palestinian rights and opposing the Israeli occupation."
