Tax Payer Angered Over Fee To Use New Sports Complex
Topic emailed:
We were called and informed that we would have to pay to watch our kids play at the new fields. $1 per person so I have to pay $40 to sign my kid up I also have to then pay $4 per game to watch with my family? How cheap can the county be? It was bad enough when they would not lime the fields often enough last year and then did not want us to practice on them. People are having a hard time putting food on the table and now we may be paying $12 a week to watch. What happened to the fields being for the people of Taylor County? The PSA has paid to use the field; we have paid to use the field and now we have to pay again. Maybe we need to go back to the Elks lodge at least they were helping the community.

It costs money to maintain the sports complex. The money can be raised either by collecting more in tax revenue from everyone in the county, or by collecting fees from the people who use the facility. I don't have a problem with the latter, and prefer it to the prior.
One thing I do wonder is, is the county just looking to break even? Or are they hoping to generate revenue that exceeds expenses?

Well they have a new concession stand, who got the plum deal to operate the stand? Certainly not Wendle Ezell who was threatened and run off by those gal pals who make money on all of the t-shirts. I bet some crony has got a deal to profit. I think between the concession stand and what the kids pay to participate the county should break even. It certainly was not sold to the tax-payers that it would cost to watch your kids play. It sounds like a money grab, I guess the county has learned a lot from these other groups who provide a place for recreation and have their own money grab. What is this business model called?

That's right, oh by the way who profits on the shirts?

I think it is those gal pals who strut around and think they own the facility!

I thought the County built the complex, who owns it, WHO are these gal pal's, I am new to the area, what is there name I wanted to put a soccer tournament on to make money for my family, do I pay them rent for use of the facility?
Reply to this
I am not sure, I would contact Jack Brown at the county office. The facility was built by the county with grants funds (grants funds not printed, but from tax-payer pockets) and I think the county has let a few, like the Perry Soccer Association kind of faux manage it when they have activities. There are a couple of women who are the head soccer moms. They would have you think they paid and built the facility, but they likely pay very little taxes. LOL!

I am, as well, very frustrated that we will have to pay to watch our children play! Not only did I pay $135 to register, but also the cost of cleats, socks, and shin guards. We did this so our children could have a great experience with a sport, and now it has turned into a worry of how we much more we can afford with parking! I understand that there is maintenance and such, and I believe that it would be more affordable if every CAR were to pay $1.00 instead of every person. I am sure there are more that 150 cars that come and go from the sports complex every game night. It would be nice to think that our tax dollars could afford all of the cost, but I could live with $1.00 a night.

The entrance fee is for the managers of the complex they want PSA to collect it but PSA told us they don't want to collect it they have paid to use the fields as part of our sign up fee. None of the other fields I have been to charge anything. If the county wants money they need to run the concession stands for all the parents and kids that attend its where the money will be. Look at it like this in the easiest term. 1 drink at $1.25 they buy a 2 liter for a $1 or less. That 2 liter will fill ten cups with ice. Thats $11 to the stand on a good busy night 100 cups or better do the math. they have never charged for the use of the other fields and good luck taking the kids out there to play because they will run you off.

In response to all.... PSA was told to have someone at the gate as well as concessions.. However the county gets every dollar collected and half of concessions...okay so why cant this person hired by the county oversee all of this and the county can do whatever they want with all the $$$$...however when PSA tried to get local officals to volunteer none wanted to collect the 1.00 at the gate...what you the people who want this dont want to collect and volunteer????
Now as far as the PSA they must pay the county $35.00 per hour ,per field for lit fields and $25.oo for unlit fields.... now pay to attend these events??? Other counties are NOT charging for rec events...

Why doesn't the poor ole PSA let us in on how much money they and the gal pals make annually off of this little business venture. I for one, a tax payer, am glad to learn the PSA is paying anything at all. The county does not need to subsidize these groups so a few can make a buck! I also am against churches using school sites for free. As for the concessions, if you cannot make any money at that, then someone is stealing! I do not approve of how the county has handled this, they should have put everything out to bid.

Where's Waldo, I mean Glen. I know he works for the city, but his team could do some of this. We need an individual in charge of all this.

You mean all this "Grant" money is not free? You mean you have to spend money to maintain something after you build it? What a concept. Keep reading, there is more "Grant" money projects coming soon. Someone better figure out how to keep it working. It takes money to operate!

PSA is not working for profit. PSA was started because the local Rec department did not want to handle soccer. I have coached a few times in the past and can tell you that for the money the kids get a lot. For the sign up the kids get a shirt, shorts, socks, and a trophy. The team also gets a Goalie jersey for the older kids. That's more than the baseball players get. They lime the fields once a week and they have to pay the refs for there time. I still stand by the fact I don't see Tallahassee charging there family's to watch the kids. I don't see Valdosta or Thomasville. Lets face it it's a cheapskate thing to do.

Before you complain about $1 per person at the sports complex think of this: We all pay a lot in school taxes each year. You want to watch the varsity softball team play? Cough up $5.00 to get in and there is no discount for kids!
Reply to this
Taxpayer56 if my kids play well enough to make a high school team I could see paying for that. But when I pay in addition to my tax money $45 for a child to play a rec league sport then I don't think I should be charged twice for the right to use the field. Could this have something to do with the fact that the soccer league has no issues with players while the baseball league is struggling to get some kids to play?

I am sorry people have to pay their way at the new rec. complex; but life is tough when you grow up and hopefully become adults. I don't have children in school nor any that use the new complex and I sure don't have any plans to. I do pay a large amount of property taxes, probably more than 90% of the people in Taylor County pay.I like to fish and gladly pay to use the county boat ramp at Keaton. I don't expect to have my boat ramp fees paid by someone who never fishes or uses the boat ramp. Its time people in the US started paying their own way and stopped looking for the government to take care of them. Just as a side note, who do you think pays for the grants that Taylor County gets?
Reply to this
Excellent point honestman. People demand low taxes and small government, yet they want to use a ballfield for free. Government funds (grants) built it, it's up to the people that use it to maintain it. Or would you rather raise taxes to pay for it? That money has gotta come from somewhere.

Yes there are many reasons for our local "leaders" to go to church.

Honestman I have already paid for the right to use the field with my child's sign up fee. We are getting charged twice in effect. To use your example do you pay for a pass to use the ramp and then pay every time you use it? To Hey the Women don't run the Complex its run by the County I believe Glen Ratliff is in charge.

So according to TheseFortyDays then tis Glen guy will be running for office, I looked in the phone book and found where he lives, so he must be running for the school board seat of Mr. Lundy, now I have met that man and I know he goes to church because he is a Preacher, I heard him talk two weeks ago, he's good. So has this Glen guy said he is running for School Board?
Reply to this
Boy, this train is way off the track. I am familiar with Glen Ratliff and the incumbent school board member/preacher/ former city worker Lundy. The fact is that Lundy is one of the worst school board members ever and Ratliff likely is not running and would not be an asset to the district as a school board member. What our community has to evolve away from is electing these folks who do it for a check. If a school board member does not bring anything to the table, in terms of leadership, experience, ect....leave them at home. We have enough members of the oles boys club, buckeye workers and related ilk. These type of people at the county level have built a recreation facility with no idea how to keep it running, maintain the facility or have an overall plan to run appropriately. The grant money was/is just seed money, gouging the tax-payer and parent is the wrong way to drum up resources for a cost center. If the county had all of the funds gal-pals and others make off the sports activities, they would have funding to support the recreation center. The charge certainly does not encourage people to use the facility and this defeats the purpose of the facility to begin with. BOCC can't run a hospital or recreation complex. I say fire Glenn and others and contract the management out to a private group. What is so hard about operating a business?
Reply to this
At least the sports complex is run legally.
Reply to this
"Legally", has the county followed procurement policies and procedures regarding concessions and other items? Or have they circumvented the process by allowing cronys control the sports complex related activities. The county has been known to be guilty of bid-rigging some things (boat-ramp, ect...) in the area of recreation. Is this a pattern? Legal? My thought is that there is an office at the complex, there are designated individuals in charge, if they cannot or are unwilling to do the job 110%, replace these cronys and get someone who can provide the right leadership. I do not think the person running the sports complex has a 9:00 AM donut hour or is a 9-5 type of job. That person should be available at all times, if the person cannot do that, then there are plenty of folks in the county/region who would take the job 24/7. The sports complex should be a hub of activity 7-days a week, all of this collecting a dollar is doing nothing but turning people off of anything sports complex related. This is exactly why folks stop participating in city recreation activities. Chaulk another one up to our outstanding community leadership!!!! What happened to getting input from the public? I guess it was used up on the visioning project council of 18, the new dirty thirty! LOL!

Mr Madness I believe there was a ad in the paper recently for this position at the Sports Complex. I'm not sure there will be any takers for this 24/7/7 position at the salary offered though. That's a lot of hours for little pay. Also, the "new dirty thirty" as you describe them are meeting tomorrow night and the public is invited as is on the front page of the paper today. I have a conflicting appointment out of town but look forward to reading in Friday's paper all your ideas presented tomorrow night. This is your chance to make a real difference and not be just another anonymous name on a blog.

Well for one the " Gal pals " are no longer running PSA there is a new group running the show and no extra money is being made...
what Psa covers with the funds is; uniforms, insurance, and money to pay the county for the use of the complex...35.00 per hour per field with lights...25.00 per hour per field unlit...
As far as who profits the money for admissions each entity is in charge of a gate $1.00 collector and the concessions workers...these people must have a volunteer back ground check and all of the $1.00 funds go back to the county and then the entity splits the concessions money with the county 50/50...
hmmmm it seems from reading Fridays paper that the city baseball rec article they have seen that PSA is having extreme difficulty trying to find a " gate keeper" and concessions worker...so they are taking bids for someone or group to take this ....
However the county is hiring someone to be the concessions manager of sorts if you will however each entity must provise the gate keeper as well as concession workers... well you mean to tell me the "hired person" cant collect $1.00 and run concessions..or our county commisioners who wanted this cant collect the $1.00... maybe they should... this would prevent background checks, theft etc....hmmmm
Reply to this
And how much do the background checks cost?
Reply to this
Well if there is not an accounting of the money, it will be the same scenario as school site accounts, band booster funds, football booster funds, ect.... the money will be stolen, mis-used and mis-appropriated. The county and others have already mismanaged the facility before it even sells the first hotdog. The county should hire someone to run it and get out of the way. Heck they are operating this like they have DMH over the years.

I saw in the paper the County is taking bids for someone to be concession manager for the baseball season, but where was the bid for the spring soccer concession stand operator ?
Did the two PAS Soccer ladies who run the soccer program get that job and that gate money automatically? I think those two gal/ pals have a monopoly on the soccer stuff.
I feel city should run the soccer program like it does little league and flag football. That way it will be fair, for our tax dollars getting what we pay for. Right now we have to pay the gal/ pals and the admission for what we already paid for with city and county MSTU funds.
Grant funds might have helped pay for it, but maintenance money comes from the city and county, no matter what Cox, Brown & Brown and associates say. Also Grant money comes for Tax payer money too. We are not fools. Nothing is for free.
The gal / pals are getting rich racketeering the money from the hard working families, because the recreation department won’t do their job and handle all sports in the recreation departments
Either do it all or shut it down. Stop the fringe benefits to the Privileged Gal / Pals they are ruling the soccer fields like little Hitler’s.
Saying who can use the facilities, and what people have to pay . The poor families are getting hit hardest, because they have to pay the most. $35.00 for outfits, $50.00 for shoes ,and everyone MUST buy their shirts and uniforms from the two GAL / PALS. No exceptions either. WHY is that?
The recreation department furnishes a uniforms now for flag football and T ball , why not soccer? Is the city manager or recreation department getting a cut from the Gal / Pals fortune machine?
(**freedom of speech / expression act, not a accusation)
Call your council man or woman and your county commissioner. Jack Brown and Bob Brown do not run this city or county , They may be allowed to…..
NOR do they need any more money. ** In my opinion , they get there 3-5 % each year regardless if other county employees get any raises, check the real books, ** in My opinion you will have to get a search warrant for the real books from the administrators or Chairman’s office not the ones they turn in to the Clerks Office . (speaking as an opinion only (**freedom of speech act, not a accusation)
** In my opinion Those two ( Brown (county) and Brown ( City) ) and the two gal pals will shuffle the money CASH Money off the books, that is why it is call splitting it 50/ 50.
If the Clerk of the Courts office is involved it WIL BE HONEST. Call your elected officials NOW before Spring Soccer season starts or your children’s money will be used un-wisely.
Recreation Department is already out there as referees, why not have them manager the concession stands too, that will create a part time positions and all the money stay between the city and the county. Close the Gal / PALS Organization DOWN..
Reply to this
The "gal pals" have made a lot of money over the years. I would not trust the clerk's office. Get it out of the county's hands to a private individual or group and then if money is stolen the individual responsible can be arrested. These "gal pals" have likely invaded the cub scouts or some other group, they will not go far!
Reply to this
you people really need to know what you are talking about before you start talking about the "galpals" they have run the PSa for several years and are simply giving it up to a group or board if you will that serve PSA ... these 2 ladies have worked hard to see that children in taylor county can play soccer... the fee each child pays DOES DOES DOES in face cover teh uniform, socks, shorts, and shirts!!! and does NOT have to be returned!!!
This fee also helps cover the use of the fields as well as pay the refs and cover insurance..
the city rec has a fee as well im sure what it covers but I think its close to the same lines...
However why should parents have to pay once for the use of the fields when enrolling their child in PSA and then when they show up on game night??
the county has decided to take up bids for someone to man the concessions and gate during the baseball season but they arent telling all this person will work with the county hired"concessions/gate keeper" and this person will only get 50% of the concessions money..all money collected at the gate and the other 50% of the concessions goes to the county...
and I dont think any of our locals who have children playing PSA have offered to work the gate for the $1.00...however PSA has been SEARCHING BEGGING, PLEAING for volunteers to gate keep and give all money to the county ...but not much luck!!!
PSA is a private entity because the city/county no longer wanted soccer years and years ago!! There are many local parents on the PSA board and they have really done a great job for Taylor county kids !!

I'm sure some of u can go without a couple of packs of cigs that week or cut back on a 12 pack or two. Theres no amount that i wouldnt pay for my childs happiness. And if u dont want to pay a dollar then volunteer to be a coach that way u can get in free. Once again the fine people of Taylor County are living by that fine motto..."Do as I say, not as I do"! Well I guess I will see ya'll at the field since I'm coaching and I dont have to pay! But seriously if all u have to worry about is paying a dollar to go watch a game then I really envy you. I wish my life was that simple. SEMPER FI and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Well lets see I don't smoke I don't drink maybe i should stop eating a penut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch. I used my income tax refund to pay for my kid to play. My income has been cut in half by the economy. I am on food stamps now and every time I turn around have to send money to the school for supplies or some school trip. This is a hard time for many Americans I am just one. Instead of getting to go and enjoy watching my kid playing with my Family when I am off work I have to come up with more money that my county says they need. Considering the numbers out of work in this county you would think the county would try and be supportive of some fun for the citizens but then again I guess its the county we live in.

I am sorry EVERYWERE I didn't include my property tax my car and home insurance for the year. The home repairs that come with owning a home . The new tires for my wife's car so my kids are safe and don't have to leave the house at 6:30 am to get to school at 7:45 am. New shoes and clothes for the kids to replace the ones they have out grown. They do not charge everywhere. They do not charge to watch the kids in Tallahassee, Thomasville, Valdosta, Madison, Live Oak or Lake City. Heck I took my kids to the outdoor day in Jefferson county and that was free of charge. Why does the county not try and raise money like all the others do if you have a sports complex put on tournaments and events and sell the heck out of the concession stands. That way the county is helped your restaurants get more people eating at them the hotels fill up people buy stuff at the stores

I am protesting the fee by not attending and enrolling my kids in any city, county or psa sponsored activities. There plenty of other activities, such as 4-H, camps in the region, Upwards B-ball and church activities that do not have coaches and organizers that are drug users, drunks, alternative (homosexual) lifestyle doers, ect...involved. The sports complex activities are getting about as absurd as the boy scouts.

That's a good excuse to use when your kids want to play soccer, baseball or football. Daddy I want to play ball with my friends. No son you can't play because I'm stubborn and I am gonna show the County and City, they won't get my money. So you can't play. Just be honest to them, your to lazy to coach or help, or even go, you just come up with an excuse. Pure sorriness, haha.

It cant ever be about the money its always got to be another reason. I have coached in the past. If it was that I didn't want to pay the county or PSA I would not have signed up in the first place. I did not intend on having to spend an extra $40 a month just to have the privilege to put my feet on the grass to watch my kids for a change instead of coaching a team again .

good excuse, the fact is most kids do not want to participate with lack of quality volunteers. it is the parent's responsibility to keep their children away from the dregs of our community. why on earth would a parent surround their child with folks (volunteers) that they would not associate with. you can keep all of the homosexuals and swingers of the community. i will keep my children safe from these folks and the ilk they run with. that is my right.

I would not mind the $1, my kids stop participating years ago when the teams were stacked up by the city to be two all-star teams and the rest were practice teams for the two all star teams. Our team had no pitcher, the two all star teams had four pitchers each. When everyone complained we were told that the parents of the all stars were all volunterring on thoe two teams and had to be with their kids. So much for picking names from a hat. Kids are smart they know when the adults are ruining it for the kids. That is why a lot of kids and parents do not participate in organized sports in our community. It is the programs loss, the kids loss. Chaulk on up to the leadership in our community, again!

I am tired of reading about you all complaining. Get your lazy butt off your crusty lawn chair that is on the back porch of your nasty, flea infested trailer and do something about it. PSA is non-profit and is great for the community. It is ran by a committee, for those who think it is ran by the "galpals." These two ladies happen to be concerned citizens that want the best for their children and the community. They make no money off of PSA and they put hours of work each week into it so your spoiled rotten children can play. Get a life bloggers. None of you are so poor that you can't afford a dollar entry fee. If you can;t afford to sign your child up then get a job. Get your facts straight before you blog.

The problem is that if you pay a fee for the field and for the lights which the psa did. If they dont know how much it cost to run the complex than put somebody over who can figure it out. I bet I spend more than most on sports out of my pocket but I would not talk about people like some is doing. If you use something than pay for it.

The reason that the PSA can't get any volunteers to collect the admission fee, is the fact that most of the parents don't want to pay it, nor be forced to collect it. It is a real shame that these parents have to pay for their children to play soccer on the fields and then have to go pay to watch them play.

Can anyone tell me who is actually in charge of the sports complex? We have a travel team that plays year round, and we have no where to practice. I thought thats why we built the baseball complex was for the kids to actually get to use it. It stays locked up. They say its for game use only,So 10 months out of the year is not used and is under lock and key. How can you expect to learn the game and be any good if you don't practice! Some of our kids might have a future of some kind in soccer or baseball if they were given a chance to work at it,you cant just play 6 or 8 weeks a year and expect to be any good. Looks like to me we wasted several million dollars on the complex if our kids cant benefit from it. Someone please help me with this.

That commissioner is too busy working on the big stimiulus dollars pipe line going through his property/pasture. The sport complex is second hand news to special interest.
